Welcome To Season 11!
May 16th film at Art House
The Janes

The Janes
In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago – arresting and charging seven women who were part of a clandestine network. Using code names, fronts, and safe houses to protect their identities and their work, they built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable abortions in the pre-Roe v. Wade era – a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois. They called themselves “Jane.”
Oscar-nominated Tia Lessin and Emmy-nominated Emma Pildes’ revelatory documentary could not be more timely – The Janes offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group, many speaking on the record for the first time. This galvanizing documentary tells the story of our past and, potentially, our future.
101 minutes
Free admission, but this film is expected to sell out so we encourage you to reserve a ticket in advance.
Post Film Panel Discussion
Judith Arcana is a Jane, a member of the Chicago underground service that helped thousands of women and girls get safe illegal abortions before the US Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade in January of 1973.

Art House (formally The Bijou) will be our home (again). We began our journey bringing documentaries to Eugene 10 years ago at The Bijou, then moved to The Metro theater 5 years ago, and now we’re coming back to the Bijou’s new incarnation as Art House. We appreciate your loyalty in moving with us and we’re excited about the better viewing angles for all theater seats, improved sound system for panel discussions, and a lobby and courtyard that facilitates conversations before and after the films that Art House provides. And we’re thrilled to continue to support general manager Edward Schiessl as he creates a venue dedicated to community events. Check out the July Be sure to check out the Act Up! pages for all of the Season 10 films. They are full of excellent resources for each of the films shown this past season.
